Pigments
Pigments are the basic materials of all painting
«Unlike our primitive ancestors, who used only red, black, white and yellow,
we have nowadays a very vast range of colours to choose from.
Millenniums of experiments and research were necessary
to obtain the enormous number of colouring agents now on the market.».

Those who compare the rapid falling apart of contemporary works of art with the old works may be led into thinking that the pigments once used weren't the same as today. In ancient art the scientific and artistic knowledge were bound not only to alchemy but also religion and philosophy. Pigments were both pharmaca and venena. They were used to cure, to paint, to poison and to prepare magic potions. It has long passed the time when painters learned their job at their master's shop, for modern civilisation has widened the gap between man and nature.
Today the great majority of painters buy the colours in tubes without knowing their composition and origin. Most of the times they don't know what pigment mix between themselves, which can change tone by using an iron spatula or how they modify according to the binder employed.
Our pages would like to be addressed to all those who care about the safeguard of pictorial arts. They will touch upon the "pigments" currently in use, and the pigments no longer in use (due to diverse causes, as for instance an exhausted seam or environmental changes,...)

We believe these pages can be a valid support for those who want to know better the fascinating world of art.

We wish you an enjoyable net-surfing by advising you to search for our Guidelines to the pages under the voice `Pigments'.
